One year of PM Surya Ghar – What has been achieved and what next?

The PM Surya Ghar – Muft Bijili Yojana, aimed to provide free electricity to households by subsidizing solar panel installation,  is completing one year this February. The scheme was announced by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024 and came into effect from February 29th 2024. It is the world’s largest domestic rooftop initiative and is expected to accomplish an installation base of One Crore households by 2027.

The PM Surya Ghar Scheme provides a subsidy of 60% of the cost for upto a capacity of 2kw and 40% for capacities between 2-3kw. For capacities above 3kw the subsidy is capped at Rs. 78,000. So for 1kw the subsidy amount shall be Rs. 30,000, for 2 kw the subsidy shall be Rs. 60,000 and for 3kw and upwards upto 10kw, the subsidy amount shall be Rs. 78,000/-.

As on 27th January 2025, more than 8.46 lakh households have benefitted from the scheme of which 45% of them are receiving zero electricity bills. The rate of adoption has seen a staggering increase of ten fold times to 70,000 a month, which clearly indicates that the awareness and adoption is on a steady increase. Of the top 5 states with the highest number of households adopted, Gujarat tops the list, followed by Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Rajasthan.

This would help save around Rs 75,000 crores annually in electricity costs. In the budget 2025, the government has increased allocation for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana by 80% to 20,000 crore.
